Kathy is confused and can barely think a clear thought. What should she do? She is only twelve, how can she believe, what is just happening to her? But she is also a child, curious and open minded. Instinctively she senses, that all her Grandmother has told her, has slept inside of her. She had always felt different from others. Different from her friend Maggie, different from her cousins, different from her peers.
She watches her Grandmother. Grandmother, she thinks. I have never had a grandmother. Do I look like her? Is this really happening? Yes, she cannot deny it, she is really sitting here with the elves talking to her. Her Grandmother is still smiling. “Kathy, we wish you no harm. I know you need time to understand, to believe. Unfortunately our time is not unlimited. Your parents, your elf parents, are in danger. Please trust me.”
Kathy knows, that her Grandmother is right and she does not hesitate as she says, “Grandmother, I believe you. I really have felt it for some time, but I could not find the words. It is wicked and wonderful at the same time. I, Kathy, am an elf. But… why don’t I have wings?”
The elf smiles. She is happy that Kathy believes her and is finally here. “You will get your wings in time. Now come with me, I will show you our realm. Don’t worry your adoptive parents. They will not notice the time. Down here everything is faster. Time flies.” She takes Kathy’s hand and steps out into the realm of the elves.
Suddenly everything looks more vibrant, quite different from when she first arrived. She sees more. Everywhere are little elves watching her, giggling and waving. Grandmother tells her, who lives where, and who everybody is. She introduces her to her court, and all are happy and bow down before Kathy.
It is unbelievable, Kathy sees a small golden carriage go by in the middle of the air, and she can just step aside. In the carriage are two girls, who are laughing. Grandmother laughs also and shoos them away with a mild gesture. Everything is so beautiful and so new. “Who are those two girls, Grandmother?” asks Kathy.
“They are your Cousins Helena and Katharina. They are high-spirited and sometimes quite rude. But in their hearts they are lovely girls. You will get to know them better. Her mother is the sister of your mother, your aunt. But that’s another story. Mariella, your aunt, is partly responsible, that your parents could be kidnapped. I have banned her from the Realm of the Elves. She lives in a world in between, but unfortunately she comes around here, when you least expect her. Kathy look, here is your parents’ house. Go inside and look around.”
Kathy is looking at the small house and likes it immediately. It is white with yellow framed windows. The door is painted with flowers so beautiful, that one believes one can smell them. Without hesitation Kathy steps inside. She knows this is her home and feels, that she has been here many times before. Kathy does not have to look for it; she knows exactly where the living room is, the bath, the kitchen. She is walking purposefully towards a room — her room — and opens the door.
Suddenly she has tears in her eyes. It looks exactly the same as her room in New York, only the pictures on the walls are different. There are many photos of her childhood on the wall. They document her growing up. She sees herself as a baby, as a toddler, on her first day of school and even every year on vacation. She is looking closely at the photos and suddenly realizes, that little elves can barely be seen in each photo. You have to really examine them closely, but they are everywhere.
Her Grandmother said, “I told you we were always around you. You just could not see us. We have watched over you and protected you. Now come on, my child, we have got a lot ahead of us. I will tell you, how it came about, that your parents were kidnapped by the dragon.”
